So… what actually is biodegradable glitter?

Great question.

Because the glitter world is unfortunately full of vague promises, suspicious wording and enough greenwashing to make Mother Nature roll her eyes.

At The Glitter Tribe, we only use BioGlitter®  a TÜV-certified freshwater biodegradable and home compostable glitter made from plant-based cellulose instead of conventional plastic glitter.

 How does biodegradable glitter actually break down?

Now before anyone imagines glitter dramatically melting in a puddle five seconds after application… let’s discuss.

Biodegradable glitter doesn’t simply dissolve in water.

It needs naturally occurring bacteria and microorganisms to begin the decomposition process.

Once introduced to environments where microbes are present - like soil, compost, freshwater or wastewater systems - nature gets to work.

Those tiny microorganisms break the glitter down into:

• water
• carbon dioxide
• biomass

Basically, the world’s tiniest cleanup crew.

The speed of biodegradation depends on environmental conditions like:

• heat
• moisture
• oxygen
• microbial activity

But under the right conditions, BioGlitter® can begin breaking down in a matter of weeks.

 WAIT… does that mean it breaks down inside the jar?

Fear not.

Without bacteria and microorganisms present, there is no natural biodegradation process.

Meaning your glitter stays perfectly stable while stored in its jar waiting patiently for its main character moment.

No microbes = no biodegradation.

Is biodegradable glitter safer for waterways and nature?

Traditional glitter is typically made from plastic films that contribute to long-term microplastic pollution.

BioGlitter® was designed as a better alternative.

Its plant-based cellulose core allows it to break down naturally rather than lingering in the environment as conventional plastic glitter does.

So if a little post-party sparkle accidentally escapes into the sink or garden, nature can handle this one far more gracefully.

What about PLA glitter and “fake” biodegradable glitter?

Some glitter products use PLA (polylactic acid), a plant-derived plastic often marketed as eco glitter or biodegradable glitter.

While PLA is technically plant-based, many PLA glitters still require very specific industrial composting conditions to properly break down.

Meaning?

In normal natural environments. like soil, waterways or home compost, they may behave far more like conventional plastic than consumers realise.

Unfortunately, the word “biodegradable” gets thrown around very loosely in the glitter world.

That’s why certification matters.
