FAQ
Biodegradable Glitter FAQ
What is biodegradable glitter?
Biodegradable glitter is an eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastic glitter.
The Glitter Tribe uses TÜV-certified BioGlitter® made from plant-based eucalyptus cellulose instead of traditional polyester plastic film.
That means our glitter is designed to naturally break down in the environment instead of lingering behind as conventional microplastic glitter.
Is The Glitter Tribe glitter plastic-free?
Our BioGlitter® replaces the core plastic film used in conventional glitter with plant-derived cellulose from eucalyptus trees.
It is designed to dramatically reduce conventional microplastic pollution while still delivering maximum sparkle.
What is BioGlitter® made from?
BioGlitter® is made using a special form of cellulose derived primarily from sustainably sourced eucalyptus trees.
The raw materials are sourced from responsibly managed plantations operating to PEFC™ and FSC® standards.
Is your glitter certified biodegradable?
Yes.
Our glitter is TÜV-certified freshwater biodegradable and TÜV-certified home compostable.
BioGlitter® has undergone independent testing including ISO14851 and ISO14852 freshwater biodegradation testing across the complete glitter particle, including both the core and coating.
Is biodegradable glitter home compostable?
Yes.
Our BioGlitter® is certified home compostable and industrial compostable.
Under the right environmental conditions, microorganisms naturally break the glitter down into carbon dioxide, water and biomass.
How long does biodegradable glitter take to break down?
Biodegradation speed depends on the environment and the presence of microorganisms, oxygen, heat and water.
As a rough guide, BioGlitter® may biodegrade within approximately 30–90 days once exposed to natural environmental conditions.
Does biodegradable glitter dissolve in water?
No — dissolving and biodegrading are completely different things.
BioGlitter® does not simply “vanish” in water like sugar or salt. Instead, microorganisms naturally break it down over time in environments such as freshwater, wastewater and marine conditions.
Is your glitter safe for wildlife?
BioGlitter® is designed to biodegrade naturally in the environment instead of persisting as conventional plastic microglitter.
Unlike traditional plastic glitter, our plant-based BioGlitter® is made from eucalyptus-derived cellulose and certified freshwater biodegradable.
While no glitter should ever be intentionally fed to wildlife or dumped into natural ecosystems, BioGlitter® was created as a far kinder alternative to conventional plastic glitter for the planet, waterways and the creatures that call them home.
Is biodegradable glitter really eco-friendly?
BioGlitter® is designed as a more environmentally responsible alternative to conventional plastic glitter.
Made from plant-based eucalyptus cellulose instead of traditional polyester plastic film, it is certified freshwater biodegradable and home compostable.
Does biodegradable glitter contain microplastics?
Conventional glitter is typically made from plastic film and is considered a microplastic.
Our BioGlitter® replaces that plastic core with plant-based cellulose designed to break down naturally in the environment instead of persisting as conventional microplastic pollution.
What makes BioGlitter® different from regular glitter?
Traditional glitter is usually made from PET plastic film.
BioGlitter® replaces this plastic core with sustainably sourced plant cellulose while still delivering high sparkle, vibrant colour and cosmetic-grade performance.
Can biodegradable glitter go down the drain?
BioGlitter® is certified freshwater biodegradable and designed to break down naturally with the help of microorganisms in the environment.
That said, we always encourage disposing of glitter thoughtfully whenever possible and avoiding unnecessary waste.
Is your glitter safe for makeup and body art?
Yes.
Our cosmetic BioGlitter® is designed for use on the face, hair and body, making it perfect for makeup artists, festivals, performances, creative looks and glittery little main character moments.
Can biodegradable glitter be used for crafts and sensory play?
Absolutely.
The Glitter Tribe glitter is popular for:
- crafts
- sensory play
- festivals
- makeup
- body art
- school projects
- creative events
- eco-friendly parties
Because sparkle should not be limited to just festivals.
Is BioGlitter® vegan and cruelty free?
Yes.
No animal testing is used in the development or production of BioGlitter®.
Does your glitter contain GMOs or nanoparticles?
No.
BioGlitter® does not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and it does not contain nanoparticles.
Where is BioGlitter® made?
BioGlitter® is made in Germany.
The Glitter Tribe then lovingly mixes, packs and ships your sparkle from Australia.
Does biodegradable glitter have a shelf life?
BioGlitter® has a long shelf life when stored correctly in a cool, dry place away from moisture, sunlight and microorganisms.
Basically: keep her comfy and she’ll stay sparkly.
How can you spot fake eco glitter?
Not all “eco glitter” is truly biodegradable.
Some glitters marketed as biodegradable are actually made using PLA (polylactic acid) or conventional plastic films that may only break down under very specific industrial conditions.
The best way to spot genuinely biodegradable glitter is to look for:
- independent TÜV certifications
- freshwater biodegradability certification
- home compostable certification
- clear ingredient transparency
- trusted BioGlitter® branding
The Glitter Tribe uses TÜV-certified BioGlitter® made from plant-based eucalyptus cellulose instead of conventional plastic glitter.
Because greenwashing is not cute.
